The Palermo Botanical Garden is one of the most important Italian academic institutions. It is considered an enormous outdoor museum and boasts 200 years of activity which allowed the study and the diffusion of countless plant species which are native of tropical and subtropical regions, in Sicily, in Europe and in the whole Mediterranean basin. The peculiarity of this garden is the great richness of species and the monumental size of some of the specimens. Thanks to the favourable climate the garden is a delightful place rich in a diverse flora.

The Herbarium Mediterraneum is housed in the Palermo Botanical Garden. The collections contain approximately 500,000 vascular plant, bryophyte, algal and fungal specimens. Although the collections are worldwide in scope, they focus on the state of Sicily and Mediterranean area. These collections support a rich diversity of research projects by herbarium staff and university researchers and are also a tool for basic research in systematics, ecology, phytogeography, and evolution. This site also will provide access to data and some images in the Herbarium collections. The online database is still under development (it also is in process of adding images for these specimens), and at this time, only selected collections are available online.
